HOWARD WILNER new parts => Although Honda managed to surpass market estimates for its quarterly earnings, the company did lower both its annual profit and global car sales forecats in the face of a disintegrating marketplace and the high price of materials. In figures released on Friday, July 25, Honda, which is Japan's second largest automotive manufacturer and the world leader in motorcycle production, posted an increase of 8 percent for the last quarter. The company faces challenges ahead, however, as consumer preference shifts away from large, gas guzzling trucks and SUVs. Democrats on a whole, however, are opposed to offshore drilling and have resisted efforts to lift the ban on such operations and to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to exploration. Both President Bush and congressional Republicans are solidly in favor of both moves. R-Georgia expressed a desire for a compromise, however, that would allow the increased drilling. Meeting behind closed doors on Wednesday, the bipartisan groups were seeking to draw up legislation that could hopefully be introduced before Congress goes into recess in August.

That brings losses for the year to 463,000 jobs. Alex Chadwick talks with Nancy Marshall Genzer about which industries saw the largest dro.
What do I know about Rolls-Royce? I am landing at Heathrow to be whisked southward for a rendezvous with the new coupe version of the Phantom. That meeting will be effected in Goodwood, where the Rolls works lie hard by the old racing circuit (memories there), and thence to Folkestone and a Channel crossing, this time under it, and on to Reims in France (the memories roll in like clouds on a Weather Channel simulation). Finally, we'll travel to Switzerland and Geneva's airport. A few days of driving in upscale pretense. We are pros; do not try this at home.

HOWARD WILNER luxury cars => General Motors is doing some more cutting. White-collar retirees were told Tuesday not to count on supplemental health insurance after age 65. And the company is eliminating thousands of white-collar jobs. GM officials said they hope to accomplish the downsizing through attrition and buyouts.
The Lincoln Motor Car Foundation is raising money to build a 20,000-square-foot structure on the grounds of the Gilmore Car Museum in southwest Michigan. The facility would be home to a rotating display of historic Lincolns, recent concept cars such as the MKT and chronicle the luxury marque's storied past. There's no time line yet, as organizers are still trying to raise $2 million for the project. The Lincoln complex, constructed in two, 10,000-square-foot stages, would be connected to a $4.5 million heritage center the museum wants to build in the next two years.( WILNER HOWARD how to buy a car)

For decades, these states have almost exclusively voted for Republican presidential candidates and have rarely seen any campaign action. Now, thanks in part to demographic and political shifts, they are emerging as new battlegrounds. "We have the organizational ability and the financial ability to compete there," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said recently. "There is not a head fake among them."

Chrysler, unlike the foreign manufacturers, has a real following and an incredible heritage to build on. What needs to be done is to meet the market with the right products. Americans would move enmass back to Chrysler if they do it right. Ive never seen a crowd around a Toyota at a show, but let a Dodge Challenger pull in, and the people circle in large numbers. In summary, the foundation seed is there in the American heart, it just needs the right products to flower. A small, privately held, supple company like Chrysler is best postioned to meet this challenge. Bob Nardelli, make it happen!

HOWARD WILNER auto-repair tips => Scott Simon talks with John Bogle, the founder of the Vanguard mutual fund giant, about the continuing mortgage crunch and the stock market's downturn. Bogle says this bear market is worse than previous ones because problems with the financial system are affecting the "real economy."
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - I just spent a week driving an SUV with a 4.2-liter V8 engine that produces as much torque as the 6.0-liter V10 engine in a Dodge Viper. It can go from a dead stop to sixty miles per hour in about 6.4 seconds. But this SUV is estimated to get roughly 21 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. Now, a gasoline-powered Audi Q7 with a 4.2-liter V8 doesn't even come close to 21 miles per gallon in highway driving alone, but the version I was driving was powered by a twin-turbocharged diesel engine. (For comparison purposes, the Dodge Viper gets 16 mpg overall, but fuel economy isn't high on the list of priorities for its drivers.)
General Motors announced further production cuts totaling 117,000 vehicles due to decreased consumer demand, particularly for trucks and SUVs. The lower production levels will be accomplished by eliminating a shift each at plants in Shreveport, Louisiana and Moraine, Ohio, thus lowering the company's inventory of the low selling form factors. The facilities in question manufacture the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Ranier, Isuzu Ascender, Saab 9-7x, GMC Canyon, Chevrolet Colorado, and Hummer H3.
